The Challenge
After measuring its direct carbon footprint, Lewisham Council wanted to understand the carbon footprint of its entire supply chain.
The Solution
Trucost's advanced environmental profiling model calculated Lewisham's supply chain footprint, irrespective of whether suppliers measured or disclosed their own impacts. This enabled Trucost to identify and engage with the Borough’s top 300 suppliers. Trucost then supported the Lewisham in identifying strategies to reduce the environmental impacts of future procurement decisions.
The Results
Key outcomes included:
- Helping suppliers to understand and reduce their environmental impacts.
- Establishing a target of a 10% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2011.
- Revising council procurement policies to ensure greater transparency on environmental impacts.
- Winning the Mayor of London’s Green500 ‘Indirect Engager’ award.
