Extract

This report builds on findings in Carbon Counts 2008, which also assessed the carbon footprints of the Australian equity portfolios of 14 superannuation funds. Nine of these funds alos participated in the 2011 study. Participants comprise a broad cross-section of not-for-profit funds, including some of the country's largest superannuation funds. Emissions allocated to funds were divided by revenues to calculate their carbon footprints. This provides a measure of carbon efficiency for portfolios and funds, regardless of size.

Why did AIST commission the research?

AIST comissioned Trucost to analyse carbon risks and management of climate change issues in the Australian equity portfolios of superannuation funds. The reserach aims to answer three questions:

  • How exposed are Australian superannuation fund assets to carbon costs under proposed regulations to limit carbon emissions?
  • How significant is the variation in exposure to to carbon costs (identified by carbon footprints) among Australian equity portfolios?
  • How can investment professionals measure and manage carbon risks and opportunities in equity investments?
