Measuring CO2 emissions from outsourced services

9th June, 2009

Trucost has developed a robust and cost effective methodology to help local authorities measure and report on the CO2 emissions from their outsourced services and respond to National Indicator 185; a compulsory performance indicator within the Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA).

The Trucost approach:

  • Identifies your most carbon intensive providers of outsourced services, using your purchase ledger information - in Trucost's experience around 10% of a local authority's service providers will be responsible for 90% of the total CO2 emissions.
  • Collects CO2 emissions data from your most carbon intensive service providers through a secure, online data collection portal.
  • Supports your service providers in providing information - we'll contact them and help them to provide the right information.
  • Completes your NI 185 submission - by combining data from your outsourced services with your own CO2 emissions data.
  • Provides a starting point for developing an ongoing environmental strategy - whether you want to collect CO2 emissions data for all your outsourced services or evaluate your boarder supply chain.
  • Understand opportunities to reduce carbon across your outsourced services and wider supply chain, reducing costs and increasing efficiency.
