Newsweek will publish Green Rankings 2010, its second annual listing of the environmental performance of the 500 largest public companies in America, in October 2010.  This year Newsweek expands the Rankings to include the Global 100, a listing of the environmental performance of the 100 largest companies in the world. "We had great success last year with our ranking of U.S. companies," said Newsweek's Global Business Editor Kathy Deveny. "As companies around the world become more transparent in their efforts to improve their environmental performance, it only made sense to expand our analysis to a global list. Just like the domestic rankings, the Global 100 will rank companies based on data and empirical performance."

Newsweek will also launch a Green Rankings group on LinkedIn.com to engage individuals and groups in discussions on environmental performance of companies and share ideas.  The second annual Green Rankings will be published in the October 25 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, October 18).  Hewlett-Packard received the top honor in the inaugural ranking in 2009.

Here are the elements of the Newsweek Green Rankings project:

The U.S. 500 Ranking: Comprised of the largest publicly-traded companies based in the U.S. as determined by a weighted measure of revenue, market capitalization and number of employees. The ranking will break out companies across 15 industry sectors, from banks, insurance and basic materials to technology and utilities.

The Global 100 Ranking: This ranking will select the largest 100 publicly traded companies in the world and use the same basic methodology as the U.S. 500 and break out companies by the same 15 industry sectors.

B2B Products: Newsweek will again release its Green Rankings Business Report with updated sector reports, covering the 15 sectors analyzed in the US 500 Green Rankings. This year, Newsweek will publish the Business Report as well as make sector-specific reports for the 15 sectors available individually.

Digital Content: Newsweek.com will offer interactive and sortable lists for the U.S. 500 and Global 100 companies, including industry profiles, articles and photo galleries.

Research Partners: Newsweek's partners on this project are the world's leading players in environmental research: RiskMetrics, which created the Green Policies Score by analyzing corporate policies, initiatives and response to challenges; Trucost, which calculated each company's Environmental Impact Score; CorporateRegister.com, which conducted an extensive reputational survey of CEOs, environmental officers and academics; and ASAP Media, which serve as editorial partner.

Advisory Panel: Newsweek assembled an expert panel to appraise the Green Ranking methodology and review the preliminary and final list. The panelists are:

  • John Elkington, Founder and Executive Chairman, Volans
  • Daniel Esty, Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy, Yale University
  • Marjorie Kelly, Senior Associate at Tellus Institute and co-founder and former president of Business Ethics Magazine
  • Thomas Murray, Managing Director, Corporate Partnerships Program, Environmental Defense Fund
